| TEAM CHITWOOD BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a cutting edge fighting art developed from traditional Jiu-jitsu by the Gracie family of Brazil. Even though Brazilian Jiu-jitsu contains standup techniques for winning a fight, it is famous for its devastating ground fighting techniques. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was specifically developed to allow a smaller person to defeat a larger person by sophisticated application of leverage and technique. Gaining superior position on your opponent and applying a myriad of chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations becomes the foundation for this fun martial art.
Our Very Clear and Proud Lineage
The Gracie Family > Shawn Chitwood
Our Director of Training, Shawn Chitwood, was among the first Americans to train in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under the famous Gracie Family. He began his training with the Gracie's in 1993 before the first UFC and before they were a household name under Relson Gracie, Royce's brother and trainer for the UFC. In 1998, Shawn met and trained with Saulo Ribeiro, a Royler Gracie Black Belt and the most decorated Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitor ever. According to Saulo, "Shawn has the most technical understanding of jiu-jitsu and is the most technical instructor of jiu-jitsu in the United States.". Mr. Chitwood still continues to travel to Brazil and train with the Gracie family. Team Chitwood are proud to form a strong flank of the Relson Gracie Association. |

Relson Gracie The 2nd oldest son of Helio Gracie, Relson Gracie moved to Hawaii in 1988. He began learning jiu-jitsu at 2 and entered his first competition at the tender age of 10! He was the Brazilian National Champion for 22 years straight, and during this period went undefeated. He became so popular that he attained the nickname "Campeao" or "Champion" among his friends and fans. Upon his arrival to Honolulu, it was with great pleasure that Relson introduced the art of Gracie Jiu-jitsu to the Aloha State. Now retired from competition, Relson continues to enjoy teaching classes in Hawaii and has become quite fond of the island life. He frequents Ohio to work with the Chitwood Brothers and to teach at North Central Ohio's finest Jiu-jitsu Academy. |
